A sad story

-

I read that terrible and sad story on the front page about the elderly couple having to move from their property in Manakau North because of the proposed expressway. I know I am in a minority (but by no means alone) when I say, I don’t think we should have an expressway.

So all these people’s lives get disrupted because we have to get from A to B quicker! When are we going to have a vision for the future?

We should have better rail transport just like they do an Europe and Britain. Why do we have to drive in our individual cars everywhere? Not only does the expressway disrupt the lives of lots of people, it wrecks the environment (especially as this expressway will be going through a whole lot of lifestyle blocks) so the birds disappear, and it wastes a huge amount of sand and sand has become an environmental issue of today. It is being stolen off beaches, or dredged from the sea at great cost to the ecosystem.

Isn’t it enough that we are heading for an environmental disaster with climate change but we have to go on wrecking the environment? I despair. YVONNE SUMMERS
