Science experiment kids can do

- By KARA LUMMIS

You may be wondering how science and fun can be used in the same sentence.

Easy! I am about to show you how.

You can look forward to trying out some great science experiments at home in your family kitchen.

As scientists, you want to be watching what happens really carefully.

Before you do your experiment, come up with an

idea as to what you think might happen. This is called a hypothesis — an educated guess.

One of my all time favourites

is Marbled Milk.

It’s easy, it’s clever, it’s beautiful and it never looks the same twice. Here’s how you make it: Place about 2 — 4 cm of milk in a bowl.

Add a few drops of different food colourings to the milk, around the outside.

DO NOT MIX!

Add a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid into the middle of the milk.

Watch the magic begin. Can you think of any ideas as to why this happened? Don’t worry whether your answer is right or wrong, Scientists learn a lot from their mistakes.

When you add the detergent, it changes the surface of the milk. The water that is in the milk flows easier and the food colouring allows you to observe (see) the swirling motion that is caused by the mixing of the milk and detergent.

You could play with this experiment and do it without food colouring or try it with different kinds of milk, like trim milk.

Does the type of milk make a difference to the results?

Have fun experimenting.
