Groups benefit from car show

-

Tararua Rodders Inc, formed in Levin in 1972, recently held their Biennial Chrome n Custom Car Show, attracting over $5 million worth of mainly American and Australian hot rods, classic and muscle cars.

From the proceeds of the event the club gave away $6000 to local organisations.

Recipients of cheques were: Levin Group of Riding for the Disabled, Diabetes Horowhenua Branch, Shannon School, Palmerston North hich Rescue Helicopter, Skills 4 Living, Adult Day Club, Horowhenua Community Health Shuttle and Te Whiri Ko¯ko¯.

The Levin Events Centre was the venue for this auto extravaganza. Both halls were full and the whole sealed area outside played host to a plethora of race cars comprising drag cars, speedway, circuit cars, boats, classic, big rigs and 4WD vehicles.

The people in attendance arrived by the hundreds in classic cars and hot rods which meant another show in the carpark as well.

This event, run every second year, has consistently punched above its weight when it comes to car shows and displays here in New Zealand.

The recent show at the end of September attracted a lot of very high-end cars from around the region and beyond keen to support this charitable event.

Teng Tools Muscle Garage that features on CRC Motorsport Sundays on TV3 were in attendance filming this year. The resulting segment showcased Tararua Rodders and Levin in a positive light.

The show is now a premier event and amongst the best New Zealand has to offer, hence the coverage not only on television but print media like NZV8 and NZ Petrolhead publications.

Local organisations were the beneficiaries of donations this year.

“It’s great being able to give back to our local community,” said president Dave Sayles.

“Some of these people and organisations fall through the cracks of funding options from government agencies while others are more mainstream but nonetheless deserving. I think we struck a pretty good balance and cross section in our community for those in receipt of some financial assistance.”

The local hot rod club has gone from strength to strength over the years but with imports of classic cars at all-time highs and the camaraderie and fellowship within the classic vintage and hot rod communities.

It’s a good time to enjoy going for a cruise and being part of a club.

These vehicles are mobile pieces of art and aren’t about to disappear any time soon.

The whole industry supports many businesses and individuals throughout the country who in turn spend in the communities they live in. The whole scene has evolved to become very mainstream.

The Tararua Show attracts about 5000 people both locally and many hundreds from out of town who supported the many food vendors on site or come into town for a bite to eat.

The next big event is around the same time in 2021 so keep an eye out.
