New students arrive to start school

- By MARK ROBINSON Principal

Kia ora Koutou, Talofa Lava, Malo e lelei, greetings to you all.

It is a pleasure to be able to write with the latest news from our student community here at Waiopehu College and we look forward to bringing you more information and updates throughout 2020.

It was great to be able to welcome such a superb bunch of new students at the Year 9 po¯ whiri in January and their positive behaviours and excellent personal presentation are a credit to themselves and their families.

Our new Year 9 students tell us they are enjoying school and they appreciate the warm welcome and the family friendly atmosphere in classrooms and around the grounds.

This is something we pride ourselves on and we continue to work hard to grow good people through our core Pehu PRIDE values of Positivity, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Excellence.

A major highlight for us this year has been the introduction of our new Future Focused Curriculum.

Students are all enjoying their new electives and courses and we will be featuring more on these developments in the Chronicle over the next week or so.

Like many secondary schools at this time of year we have been busy analysing our NCEA results and once again our students can be proud of their achievements at all three levels of NCEA.

I have included a photograph which shows the students who passed NCEA Level 1 or 2 with either a Merit or an Excellence endorsement, an achievement of which they can be immensely proud.

Our students have already enjoyed Year 13 camp as well as Swimming Sports recently, with O¯ taki House taking out first place overall, closely followed by Blackwater, O¯ hau and then

Makaretu. Special congratulations to Courtney Fitzgibbon, Hana Kerins, Hayley Duggan, Mason Jones, Campbell Fraser and Elijah Bathan for placing first in their respective Junior, Intermediate and Senior age groups. In addition, Hana recorded a time of 15.25 seconds for the 25M Backstroke, which sets a new record for this event. This is a remarkable achievement as Hana set the College Butterfly record in 2019!

Looking forward to bringing you more news throughout the year ahead.
