Free family day opens pool season

Feedback sought on the future of Foxton pools

- Jennie Gutry

More than 300 people enjoyed a free family fun day at Foxton pools with inflatables, photo booth, dunk tank, giant games and food trucks.

The annual event is usually held in September to mark the opening of the pool for the season. This year it was delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Megan Ford, aquatics programme and events supervisor who organised the day, said: “It was great to watch families enjoy a free, fun day.

“The weather wasn’t the best but it was a great turn out and lots of fun was had by all.

“The most popular activity was the dunk tank.

“Children love dunking their friends in the water.”

The event also marked the start of community engagement on the future of Foxton pools.

Horowhenua District Council has identified a number of issues with the facilities including the poor condition of the building, low use of the pools and the abandoned outdoor pool.

Visitors to the family fun day were able to see designs of possible options for the future of Foxton pools.

There are three options being consulted on:

Option 1 — rebuild

Option 2 — extend outdoor pool and add a leisure pool and splash pad

Option 3 — hybrid rebuild existing

building, build new indoor pool and outdoor splash pad

The engagement period runs until November 23 and the information received through this period will inform the options for next year’s

Long Term Plan. More information can be found here https://www. horowhenua.govt.nz/Council/HaveYour-Say/Future-of-Foxton-Pool.

As a coastal district with many beaches and rivers, Megan said it is important for people in Horowhenua to learn about water safety and how to swim.

Aquatics Horowhenua run a range of swimming lessons in their facilities, and also offer a payment plan. i
