Tight games at Central Levin Triples
Central Levin Bowling club held the triples over the weekend and some tight games were played. Of the six teams who contested the Women’s event. Three qualified for post section play. Janet Monteith’s team played June Mears team and came from behind to win in a tight encounter.
Both teams had junior ladies who played well over the 18 ends. In the final against Dot Collis team it was a game which could have gone either way and after 17 ends the scores were tied at 15 all. Players exchanged shots each bowl, with Dot Collis taking the jack into the ditch on the final end to win 19-15 with four shots. This is the third year in a row that Dot’s team has won the title.
Winners were Dot Collis(s), Viv Hudson and Paula Vercoe. Runners up were Janet Monteith(s), Dene Norton and Anna Whiley.
The men’s competition saw twelve teams start the day and of these six qualified for post section play. Eddie Irving and Ray Hudson drew the byes so it was up to the rest to play. Selwyn Riwaka’s team defeated Peter Bovey and Peter Shepherd defeated Neil Bovey to move to the semi-finals. These matches proved to be very tight but in the end Selwyn defeated Peter and Ray defeated Eddie.
The final over the eighteen ends proved to be a game of two halves. Ray took an early lead, but after some consistent tight bowls from Selwyn’s team they came out on top by 17-13.
Winners were Selwyn Riwaka(s), Gerry Welply and Danny Madden with runners up Ray Hudson(s), Bryan Vowell and Gary Burns. Bryan
is also a junior and second year bowler.
Both the winners will proceed to the Champion of champion event to be held at Otaki Bowling Club, in May next year.
