Giant hole in garden baffles resident

Family in shock after finding large hollow at property

- Paul Williams

Astrange hole in the front yard of a Manakau property has its owner mystified. Laurence Tanga’s young children showed him what they thought was a small hole last week.

He kicked it with his heel, only for the ground to give way and reveal a large hollow gap in the earth just below the surface of the lawn.

The hole was more than a metre deep and quite cavernous underneath the entrance at the top. It was large enough to hide a small person.

“I put my phone in there to have a look around and realised just how deep it was,” Tanga said.

Initially, he thought it might be a

huge rabbit hole but now he wasn’t so sure. There was no entry point and no sign of rabbits.

It was a little bit unnerving as Tanga had two young children who regularly played on the lawn.

“It’s strange to think anyone could have fallen in it. We walk back and forth across the lawn all the time,” he said.

Tanga had notified regional council Horizons of his discovery and wanted to wait to see if it was of any significance before he filled it back in.
