Good’s batting saves the day for Levin Old Boys

Win against Weraroa puts team into the finals for Coastal Cup

- Paul Williams

Levin Old Boys batsman Matthew Good produced the innings of the season to help his side into the final of the Coastal Cup after they looked dead and buried against Weraroa last weekend.

The Coastal Cup was played between clubs from

Horowhenua-Ka¯piti, and Wairarapa.

In a coup for the province, HK clubs filled all four semifinal spots last weekend, with LOB beating Weraroa, and Paraparaumu beating Ka¯piti Old Boys.

LOB have made the final purely by virtue of Good’s batting masterclass in their semifinal against Weraroa, scoring a brilliant century.

In the context of the match, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Good was forced to pad up earlier than expected.

He had just watched the LOB top order fall to one of the most impressive bowling spells in recent memory.

Weraroa opening bowler Caleb O’Connell showed just what a destructive weapon he could be with a brilliant spell that almost single-handedly threatened to finish the semifinal by afternoon tea.

O’Connell claimed the wickets of the first four LOB batsmen in a sublime opening spell — he had the pads off top order and representative batsmen Jamie Pinfold (6), Dion Sanson (22), Andrew Simpson (6) and Bailey Te Tomo (0) by his sixth over, and LOB were in dire straits at 45-4.

At one stage O’Connell was 4-6 off eight overs — with seven maidens — and was almost unplayable, eventually finishing with figures of 5-18 from his 10 overs.

But cue the experience of Good, who saw off the final 12 balls of O’Connell’s first spell before stamping his own class on the match. He needed help from the other end and it came from Mathew Wilson (62), as LOB completed their 50 overs and set a mammoth total of 317.

O’Connell was given a rest, leaving him two overs for later, Wilson and Good put the foot down, scoring 30 from the next two overs in a conscious effort to play aggressively.

O’Connell eventually got his man in his second spell, but by that time the damage was done and Good had scored one of his finest innings — his fifth century in HK club cricket — with a swashbuckling 146 from 119 balls, including 20 fours and four sixes.

Weraroa needed to start well, but lost opener Locky Spring lbw to Daemon Kennett in the second over. Blake De Burgh (40) and Keegan Maclachlan (48) and Carl Trask (34) offered good resistance, but ultimately the Good innings was the difference and they were all out for 243 in the 42nd over.

In the other semifinal, a depleted Ka¯piti Old Boys lost by seven wickets to Paraparaumu at Ken Kena Park, batting first and being all out for 127 in the 41st over.

It was a tough result for KOB, who were able to beat Paraparaumu in two-day and T20 games this season, as they went into the semifinal without four players who were isolating with Covid-19.

While the respective coaches of both teams had named their starting line-ups for tomorrow’s, both teams could still possibly be subject to last minute changes due to

Whanganui

Covid-19 isolation requirements. At the time of print, there were two players unavailable tomorrow for Paraparaumu who were forced to isolate, while it would be a stroke of luck if LOB were completely immune.
