De Molen joins record attempt
This Saturday, April 9, Foxton’s De Molen will be part of a record attempt to have the largest possible number of windmills in operation around the world at one time.
So far more than 700 windmills in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and Germany have signed on and will be turning between 9pm and 10pm New Zealand time on Saturday.
De Molen’s staff are proud to be representing the southern hemisphere.
The record attempt is part of the Year of the Miller, which
celebrates 50 years of voluntary windmilling in The Netherlands.
Their Guild of Voluntary Millers keeps windmilling alive, training many in the trade of milling. The guild has 2600 members with 1500 of them licensed millers.
Judy Sanson from the Windmill Trust said De Molen will be open from 8pm and that includes the shop.
“It depends a bit on the wind, whether we can run the mill, but this is an attempt to draw attention to the marvel that is a windmill. De Molen is a fully functioning traditional Dutch windmill made entirely of timber. It is a centuries’ old technology that still works.
