OPINION PIECE: MORE SUPPORT FOR OVER-65S

-

As your local MP, I wanted to make sure you knew about the extra income support the Government introduced on April 1st, including a boost to superannuation.

Despite the impact of COVID-19, New Zealand’s economy is in a strong position, with record low unemployment, high export prices and lower levels of debt than many other countries. However, I know that while New Zealand is tracking well overall, not every family here in Horowhenua will be feeling the economic benefits.

You’ve probably heard that we’ve reduced fuel tax by 25 cents a litre and cut public transport fares in half for three months, providing immediate relief through the current crisis as the war in Ukraine drives up fuel prices and the pandemic continues to push global inflation rates. This is expected to save Kiwis up to $17 when filling up the tank – you might have already noticed the difference at the petrol pump – as well as provide cheaper alternatives for getting around.

However, this is not the only way we’re supporting Kiwis with the cost of living. On 1st April, the next suite of our Government’s income support changes kicked in, putting more money in the pockets of people in the Otaki electorate.

For seniors, this will mean a significant boost to superannuation payments. Single people will see their payments lift by $52 a fortnight, with payments increasing by $80 a fortnight for couples. Families, students and people receiving a benefit will also get an income boost, thanks to these changes.

As we head towards winter, I know some people will be worried about the added pressure of higher power bills. The good news is our Winter Energy Payment will restart on 1st May, helping with heating costs through the colder months. Single people will receive more than $80 a month, while couples will receive more than $125 per month. I know this payment has made a real difference for older residents, helping them stay warmer and healthier through winter, so I’m sure it will be welcomed again this year.

There’s no quick fix to issues like the cost of living, but we’re taking a range of actions that together, will make things easier for Kiwis, and will build on the measures we’ve already put in place. Since the day we took office, we’ve worked hard to lift incomes and ease the pressure, through things like cheaper doctor’s visits, free lunches in schools and minimum wage increases. The changes that came in last week are the next step.

If there’s anything my team or I can help you with, or if you’d like to raise an issue that’s affecting our community, please do get in touch. We’re always here to help. For now, though, I hope you’re keeping safe and well.
