Pulse trio pass on netball knowledge
Premiership stars in town to give young netballers an insight
Aspiring young netballers will have a chance to meet some rising stars of the game at Donnelly Park in Levin tomorrow. Pulse players Tiana Metuarau, Aliyah Dunn and Paris Lokotui will hold training sessions for all ages ahead of their next match in Palmerston North this weekend.
Netball Horowhenua president Robyn Wills said it was an open invitation for any young player to participate in the training camp, from noon to 1.30pm.
“Everyone is welcome to take advantage of what is a great opportunity to meet and learn from players of this calibre,” she said.
Wills said the training camp was a good lead into a season that would see the return of junior representative netball in Horowhenua. Trials for U14 and U16 teams would be held in this month to select Horowhenua squads to compete in regional tournaments.
Attending representative tournaments gave players a chance to pit themselves against the best teams from other regions and also compete for higher honours, she said.
“It is a huge opportunity to be seen,” she said.
Meanwhile, tomorrow morning at 9am would also signal the start of the netball season, as 18 teams compete a series of grading games ahead of the senior competitions starting the following week on May 7.
Many clubs had again entered teams in a competition that also features several teams from colleges in the regions, with Horowhenua, Waiopehu, Manawatu¯ and O¯ takibased schools all well-represented.
The school collegiate grade netball competition would hold their grading tournament on May 7, while primary and intermediate school teams would start a week later on May 14.
Strong college teams and school teams were important to the future of netball in Horowhenua, she said.
Wills said a big focus of the Netball Horowhenua committee this season would be encouragement and support of volunteers, with a number of initiatives to be rolled out with the support of Netball New Zealand.
