Pairs the headline act in Levin Classic

Central Club combo take out weekend competition

-

Levin Bowls broke with tradition at the weekend with a changed format for its annual Cobb & Co Classic. The club replaced its twoday invitational triples event with a two bowl — two end knock-out pairs and singles competition on the first day, with a singles event on the last day.

The main event was the pairs. Sixteen pairs played a round robin event in which each pair played fifteen other teams over a three-hour period.

By the end of the competition the leading pair, locals from the Central Club, Iraia Peni and Adam Batty had won 11 of their 15 games, with three draws and only one loss for 25 points.

Hot on their heels were the Levin Bowls pairing of Wayne Judd and Graeme Mathie with 11 wins and one draw for 23 points.

In third place was the Levin Bowls pair of Ken Hayward and Barry Cross with 19 points

In fourth was the Waitarere bowls pair of Janet Olliver and Jim Murphy with 18 points, while fifth were Elisabeth Glinkowska and Erica Whittaker who also took out the junior bowlers prize, gaining free entry to any Bowls Kapiti Coast Centre Open Tournament.

Judd won the singles the final against Central Levin’s Adam Batty.

On Sunday the Shanghai Singles format involved three players on a rink — eight rinks meant 24 players were in action.

The winner was the first to reach 31 points, with three points for the first shot, two points for second shot and one point for third shot.

After the first round game, nine players went into the Classic draw, the next nine made the Classic Plate and the six players remaining went into the Consolation Plate.

The second round game, players were competing for three of their group going through to their respective finals.

Final results from the three sections were Cobb & Co Classic, 1st. Doug Pitcher (Foxton & Beach) 2nd Mary van der Velden (Levin Bowls), who also took out the top junior prize, and third was Rob Cotter (Levin Bowls).

Robert Evans (Levin Bowls) won the plate final ahead of John Mitchell (Foxton and Beach) and and Christine Ryan (Levin Bowls).

Levin Bowls club members filled the first three placings in the Consolation Plate — Valda Anderson, Jim Winter and Les Galloway.
