Enjoy a relaxing magazine read

- Pam Coleman Library Engagement Team Lead

The damp, humid weather has influenced the column this week. Warm, moist weather brings out the best in bugs. And with the wet weather causing humidity cockroaches are having a good season.

I absolutely detest ants and cockroaches. I found myself last week howling like a 3-yearold when a large daddy cockroach landed on my shoulders.

After much jumping up and down, I looked up at the ceiling of our spare room and lo and behold mummy and baby cockroach were along for the ride too. My first instinct was to pick up the nearest book, newspaper or magazine and pound the skittling abomination into next week.

However I could never do that with mummy and baby abomination watching. I pulled on my big girl pants and carefully used my half-read copy of my magazine to move daddy out of the window. I scuttled away with said copy of the magazine Frankie in my hand.

Settling back down under cosy covers I continued to flip through the pages.

Thank goodness for magazines! Aside from helping with katsaridaphobia, (cockroach phobia), magazine articles can provide readers with a lively, breezy writing style that can inspire them to read more.

The articles in magazines are generally short, which allows us to finish reading a feature article without losing interest. The writing in magazines also tends to be easy to read.

Because they prioritise visual aesthetics throughout their pages, not just on the covers, magazines create a highly sensory reading experience, which helps improve memory.

Reading magazines and newspapers is an important part of our culture. It can provide surprising benefits like reducing stress, improving brain function, and boosting your mood.

They are great sources of information and can help us stay informed about current events.

Moreover, they can also be a great way to relax and escape from the everyday stresses of life, and are especially useful to hopefully help you remain calm while you wait for the exterminator to show up.

We have a wide range of magazine titles on all subjects, from gardening to genealogy, the economist to photography, health and fitness to fine arts and craftwork. Thanks to newspapers and magazines, our mind and point of view are consolidated and enriched. So pop into your library, have a browse and enjoy!
