Tramore — Woodville winner

Adam Scott would have made grandfather proud

- Bruce Falloon

After riding in several amateur races, Foxton amateur rider Adam Scott saluted the judge at the Woodville races on Sunday, bagging his first winner aboard his own horse Tramore. He races this horse in partnership with long-time family friend Lance Kimura.

“This win means a lot to me for a few reasons,” an elated Adam Scott said. “Mainly because it was great to carry my belated grand dad’s colours to victory. I’m sure he would have been proud that’s for sure, and it was my first winner as an owner.

“The horse came up for sale on Gavell House sale and was on this site for seven days, and there were no bids. Then she went unreserved at $500, and no one was interested,” Scott said.

“However, I called up trainer John Wheeler and said I’ll give you $400, and I’ll pick her up tomorrow, and John (Wheels, as he’s known around the tracks) said that’s fine, we can do that and the rest is history.

“It’s a bit of a funny story really, as he thought I was buying it as a hack and not a race horse.”

Six months down the track Adam had to obtain the ownership papers for the horse, and see if this horse is worth a dollar or two. Once he obtained the paper work, he carried on from there.

“Learning from my grandad (Jack Scott), it took me 12 months to learn some of the gift of the gab, animal husbandry as such, fed and fit etc. She’s a difficult horse in the weathered ground, but she’s easy on top and a very nice horse to ride,” Adam said.

“This was a great thrill, especially for a horse that was unwanted, as no one could get her onto the track, as she would flip over. I guess you could say, it was just patience really, as we know, horses can certainly test that.

“Being a young guy I’ve just bided my time which I have plenty of and now I guess we’re getting the rewards. If grandad was still around, I’m sure we would be having a brandy or two right now, that’s for certain.”

“Where to now, well, Tramore will head into the paddock for three months for a well-earned rest, and we will carry on from there early next year and maybe aim for a country cup as such. Basically you can say dreams can come true,” Scott said.

Tramore is a 6-year-old brown mare by Shocking from Willow Park. Tramore is trained under Matt Dixon. Adam has another horse Nelly Jean who is trained by Gail Temperton.

Other riders who rode in the amateur race were, Lisa Kennedy, Sam Mynott, Chelsea Sharp, Kylan Wiles, Michelle Northcott, Tyler Mercer, Scotty McNab and Leah Zydenbos.
