Study builds confidence

Pathway to new skills and knowledge

-

‘Icame to Horowhenua Learning Centre (HLC) very shy, with little confidence in myself. My aim was to get some qualifications but as it was mid-semester, the employment team helped me to get a fixed-term cleaning job at Woodhaven and helped me explore other opportunities that HLC had to offer. The employment team driving instructor also supported me to gain my full licence.

“I signed up for the Cookery level 3 course for semester 1, which I completed in June. This has truly boosted my confidence in learning and in myself. I am grateful to the employment team and the tutors who sincerely cared about my future. I am excited to continue this journey of growth and celebrate more achievements along the way. I am now doing level 2 NCEA foundations at HLC, so much has happened in a year.”

“After six years as a stay-athome mom, I signed up to the Sole Parents employment programme at HLC. After working with my employment consultant Renae on my goals and options, I decided to follow my passion for cooking. Renae helped me to enrol in a cooking course at HLC which has turned out to be the best decision I could have made. It not only reignited my love for food but also helped me overcome various challenges along the way. During the course, I had the opportunity to learn and grow as a chef under the guidance of my amazing tutor, Sahil. His expertise and encouragement pushed me to explore new flavours and techniques, expanding my culinary horizons. With each dish I created, my confidence soared.

“Completing the cooking course at Horowhenua Learning Centre has given me a new sense of purpose and excitement. I’m now ready to share my cooking creations with the world, armed with the knowledge and skills I gained throughout this transformative journey. To all the stay-athome moms out there, never underestimate the power of pursuing your passions. With determination and the right support, we can achieve incredible things. Here’s to embracing our dreams and savouring the sweet taste of success! — Thunderlee

“I am a mother and sole parent of three beautiful teenagers. I thought it was time that now they were more independent, I should start my own pathway to my future. I enrolled on the HLC employment programme through MSD. I hadn’t completed school, lacked confidence and needed support to upskill myself and complete my goals.

“Employment consultant

Sandra worked with me on a pathway plan. The first step we agreed was to do level 3 cookery, this course was amazing, the skills I gained were the start of my training and employment journey. I passed this course with excellence thanks to great support and tutoring.

“I have just begun the next step, Level 2 Hospitality, where I will add customer service and cafe´/front of house skills to my toolkit. I am absolutely loving my journey and thanks to HLC I can now see that my real goal of owning my own hospitality business is just a few steps away.” — Toni

The employment team, what they do and how success looks for clients

We work with the broadest range of people, on contracts in partnership with MSD and MPP, to find individuals sustainable employment or appropriate vocational education options. There are many

ways for people to seek our assistance, however our website or a visit to the local work and income office would be a great place to start.

If you or someone you know is wanting to find work and needs assistance our team are here to help. Our programmes cover jobseekers, sole parents, people with disabilities or conditions, Pacifica and school students who need extra support when preparing to leave school and plan for the future. We have driving instructors working in colleges and in the community.

We offer the following and much more; help to produce a CV and cover letter, driver licensing, ID, set up a personal email, computer basics and how to use online platforms to apply for jobs, help with studylink applications, interview coaching, provision of interview clothing and other work-related items and our service is absolutely free.
