VW gains new ID

Pure-electric ID.4 and ID.5 have finally joined Volkswagen’s Kiwi line-up

-

After five years of discussion with the factory and three years waiting since its global launch, Volkswagen New Zealand finally has the ID.4 battery electric vehicle (BEV) on sale.

The ID.4 SUV and its sister ID.5 (a coupe-style version of the same) are both based on VW’s MED BEV platform, like the Audi Q4 e-tron, Cupra Born and Skoda Enyaq.

It’s available in Pro and Pro+ specifications across both body styles, with the same 77kWh battery and rear-mounted 150kW/ 310Nm single electric motor.

VW NZ is very focused on the $70-80k price bracket – the biggest BEV market by far over the last 12 months, as it fits within the Government’s $7105 Clean Car Discount. The ID.4 Pro is $79,990, as is the ID.5 Pro – although the latter is listed as a special driveaway price until September, a reduction from the regular retail of $84,490.

The Pro+ versions of each are $90,990 and $95,490 respectively, adding extra equipment such as “IQ. Light” illumination and 3D tail lights (with a light show on start-up), front light bar, three-zone climate control, power/massage front seats and upgraded infotainment.

Aside from the sleeker profile, you can spot the ID.5 by its more aggressive bumper design. It’s slightly more aerodynamic, which means better range: 530km compared with the ID.4’s 519km.

The coupe version also has a bigger boot thanks to a little extra length, 549l versus 534l.

There’s more ID to come for NZ.

The 220kW dual-motor ID.4/5 GTX for mid-2024, followed by the facelift version of the smaller ID.3 (it’s Golf-sized) and the baby ID.2.
