Set yourself a reading resolution

Have a safe holiday full of literary adventures

- Dariann Sigley Children’s & Youth Librarian

Once again, we’re at that time of year when Christmas feels like it’s racing closer every day, but it can’t come soon enough. And with Christmas coming that means the New Year is also on its way. I’ve never been one for making (or keeping) New Year’s resolutions, however websites like Goodreads have helped me set and keep reading goals over the past several years.

After four years of study at university, I was burnt out on reading. So, in 2019 I set myself a goal to read six books, giving myself two months to read each one. By the end of the year, I was overly pleased that I’d read eight. So naturally, eight was the new number to beat in 2020. Now, this year’s goal is to read 60 books and

I’m currently sitting at 55, not including the audiobook, manga and non-fiction I have checked out from the library.

So I’m pretty confident, I’ll make my goal by the end of the year.

2022 was the year I read mainly manga, thanks to the manga collection I have been building at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-po¯ . This year, I’ve predominately listened to audiobooks as I’ve been learning how to run (and there’s only so many times you can run the same route without getting bored).

After two years of accidentally theming my reading, 2024’s theme will have a purpose. And the best way to stick to this theme?

Set it as a New Year’s Read-olution, and tell as many people as possible

to hold me accountable! In 2024, I will tackle the hoard of unread books at home, as well as the 23 books I have decorating (cluttering) my desk. Will

I read them all? No. Will I put a dent in my to-be-read pile? I hope so.

Will you set yourself a theme or number of books you want to read? Or try something new?

Stop by the library and tell us your Read-olutions for 2024, and get some wicked book recommendations

while you’re at it! However you choose to spend your time this holiday and whatever your beliefs and traditions are, Libraries Horowhenua wish you a safe, happy holiday and best wishes for 2023. Here’s to a happy holiday and a year of exciting literary adventures!
