Kaikoura surfers showed class at the 2018 Exit Surf Men’s Canterbury Champs two weeks ago, with veteran surfer Dave Lyons taking out the over 45 men’s title and Levi O’Connor surfing his way to the top in the open men’s.

The champs were held at Gore Bay over the weekend of April 21 and 22, with close to 100 competitors from across the country battling it out over two days of fierce competition.

Up for grabs was a prize pool of $10,000 in cash prizes.

It was O’Connor’s first event of the year and he had placed second in all of his heats leading up to the final, his only win coming when it mattered most, managing a 16.1 point heat total out of a possible 20.

‘‘I felt like I had been surfing good leading into the event and my new board feels really good too. I won the Kaikoura event last year but I am stoked to add this title.’’

Levi O’Connor - 1st Open Men’s; Myka Black - 1st Under 16 Boys; Josh Thickpenny - 1st Over 30’s, 4th Open Men’s; Hugh Ritchie - 2nd Longboard; Dave Lyons - 1st Over 45 Men’s.
