Letting loose before Lent

Suplexes, big hits and possibly poison mist will vanquish wrestlers when Mungavin Madness takes hold this Saturday night.

Live pro wrestling has always been popular in Porirua and this is the second event to be held in the city in recent months. There will be six bouts on the card at Mungavin Hall, with the key match-up being New Zealand Wide Pro Wrestling tag team champs Project Mayhem taking on Mikey Rave and Taylor Adams in a rematch of their recent, controversial title fight.

‘‘We weren’t looking too good [in the bout] so I spat my poison mist on Mikey Rave and was disqualified,’’ says James Shaw, one half of Project Mayhem, of the bout two weeks ago in Stokes Valley.

‘‘They weren’t happy so they’ll be looking for revenge.’’

Shaw says they hope to ‘‘bring the pain’’, using such moves as the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship – a power bomb and knee drop – the Colin Meads Trust Fund and the David Bain Memorial Trail – an atomic drop/calf kick combo.

If their devastating finishing move ‘Lorenzo’s Soil’ comes out it could be game over, folks.

‘‘We do a lot of tag team moves that are really going to get the crowd going. We’ve been champs since December and we plan to hold onto these belts for a while – come along and witness the greatest team ever,’’ Shaw brags.

Local interest will be sparked by Hoia Taylor, the NZWPW heavyweight champ. He was injured recently during training with Shaw but it is hoped he will take to the canvas on Saturday.

There is also talk of a massive Royal Rumble-style battle to decide who will take on Taylor for his belt.

One of the organisers, Angela Whitehead, says it is an event that the entire family can enjoy. The last time they were in Porirua a children’s birthday party came along to see the action. ‘‘Kids love it.’’ Food and drinks will be available, with tickets costing $15 for adults and $10 for children. They can be bought on the door or at Mungavin Dairy prior to the event.
