Wellingtonians dig deep

-

Young leaders from across Wellington hit the streets recently to raise more than $3000 for emergency kits for the South Pacific.

Over 50 members of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards programme, including Porirua City councillor Bronwyn Kropp, were challenged to raise as much as they could in two hours.

‘‘Stepping out of our comfort zones to approach strangers was very daunting for most of us but when you truly believe in the good of the cause you can find the courage,’’ Ms Kropp said.

Fellow participant Rachel Townsend said seeing the generosity of Wellingtonians touched her heart.

‘‘For me it reinforced that as Kiwis we are very giving and genuinely do care when it comes to helping our neighbours in the Pacific, no one likes to watch people suffer as they are.’’

Each emergency response kit creates the means to create shelter, hunt and prepare food and basic clothing and medical supplies.

‘‘It is important to know that while each kit costs $600 even the smallest donation contributes to something vital like a blanket or a machete which can save not just one life but a whole family,’’ Ms Kropp said.

Creative methods were employed to raise cash, including approaching MPS. Mana MP Kris Faafoi showed his support on the Beehive steps.
