Free rowing lessons on
With summer almost over, the Porirua Rowing Club is preparing for next season and is offering a free learn-to-row course.
The club ran this course last spring and attracted 35 participants of which 14 went on to race at championship regattas throughout New Zealand.
Club spokesman Matthew Hall said the course was for those wanting to find out what rowing was all about.
It will be conducted over four weeks on Wednesday evenings or Sunday mornings, is for all ages and starts on March 7.
The course will provide basic instruction on competitive rowing technique and basic boat handling skills.
Hall said participants would be taught to row by the club’s championship winning crews and coaches, and would also train alongside them.
After the course, anyone keen to continue and wanting to compete will be invited to join the club, then begin a training regime that involves advanced rowing technique and land-based fitness.
‘‘This training regime is an excellent way to get fit or maintain fitness,’’ Hall said.
‘‘Once members develop a reasonable skill level they begin competing against other beginners at club regattas around Wellington.’’
Crews good enough will also travel to championship regattas throughout the country where they will be able to see New Zealand’s present and former world and Olympic champions competing.
For those interested in finding our more the club is holding an open day this weekend, from 8am, where beginners can come and visit the club and find out more about rowing.
Those interested but unable to attend an open day can also come down on Wednesday nights from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
The Porirua Rowing Club’s boat sheds are on the foreshore of the Porirua Harbour on Onepoto Rd, Titahi Bay.
