Real Estate Institute honours dedication

- By KRIS DANDO

Seven-day working weeks don’t bother Euon Murrell too much.

The Porirua real estate agent, city councillor, JP and recently reelected board member of the Porirua Chamber of Commerce was confirmed as a Fellow of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand last week. It is an honour that acknowledges his dedication to the industry.

He is a regional director of REINZ, which includes being the lower North Island spokesman on issues that affect the real estate world.

‘‘I have given a lot of time into this industry and becoming a fellow is a proud moment for me, it’s nice to be recognised for your efforts.’’

Mr Murrell says the days of completing ‘‘a one-page sales and purchase agreement on the boot of a car’’ are long gone and the training for would-be agents is more stringent. He has been in the game for 27 years, following 17 years in the supermarket trade, after seeing an advertisement in a newspaper.

‘‘I’ve always been in sales but wanted a change and I realised this would be doing what I love and that’s meeting people. You’re helping them make what could be the biggest transaction in their lives and that comes with responsibility.

‘‘I was attracted by the freedom that the industry offers in terms of time but in saying that, I work more hours than I want to, it’s a seven-day job. The dynamics have changed with cellphones, the internet and open homes, but the philosophies are still the same.’’

His service in the community started with being on his local rugby club’s committee in Taita at age 16.

‘‘It’s never been about making money. I’ve always had the belief that if your community gives you something, you have to put it back.’’
