Take time to enjoy summer outdoors

-

Greater Wellington Regional Council was to launch its Great Outdoors summer events programme yesterday.

It was expected to feature more than 50 free or cheap events throughout the region’s parks and forests over summer.

‘‘Something for everyone – that’s the Great Outdoors 2013’s aim – and this year it’s packed full with walking, tramping, cycling, fishing, offroad driving, gliding and even model airplane flying,’’ council committee chairman Nigel Wilson says.

‘‘So whether you’re young, old, fit, or not- so- fit, check out the programme – you’ll be amazed at the impressive array of activities on offer.’’

The programme’s centrepiece is the opening of Wainuiomata’s historic Lower Dam to the public. Located in the Wainuiomata Recreation Area, the site has been closed for more than 60 years but on March 16 will be opened.

Baring Head/Orura-Pouanui and Whitireia Park – both recent additions to the regional council’s park network – are also showcased.

The Great Outdoors 2013 includes a repeat of last year’s first-ever Hikoi Ki Whitireia – Whitireia History Walk, when Ngati Toa rangatira and the regional council shared the area’s rich history with over 80 people.

Visit www. gw. govt. nz/ summer events for the full programme and booking information. A brochure will be available from libraries soon.
