US the goal for Ford boys

- By KRIS DANDO

The Fords’ back yard in Whitby is littered with golf balls, a putting strip and golf clubs – it’s summer, so it’s to be expected.

But Jayden, 11, and Taylah, 6, will have golf on their plate in winter too, after a busy few months playing in Auckland.

The family – the boys, father Glynn, mother and Porirua City councillor Izzy, along with Bella, 3 – have spent eight weekends up north as Jayden and Taylah accrued points to qualify for US Kids tournaments in the United States in July.

It’s been a slog, but the talented youngsters loved every minute.

Last year, in the world junior masters in Las Vegas, Jayden finished fifth in his age group and Taylah fourth in his.

‘‘It’s good for the experience and meeting new people and friends you’ve made before,’’ said Jayden, who has been to the United States four times to play.

Both are members at Titahi and Judgeford and get on the course whenever they can.

Jayden has a handicap of 8.4 and Taylah’s nine-hole handicap is 13.

Jayden plays division 2 interclub for Titahi. Izzy said the duo played almost every day of the holidays.

The trips to Auckland and overseas aren’t cheap, but give her boys exposure to top tournaments and players. ‘‘Golf rules our household. You can’t get away from it,’’ she said.

There’s no sibling rivalry to talk of, but it’s certain Jayden’s love of golf spurred his brother to take it up. Jayden’s longterm goal is to play professionally.

He is a member of the Wellington futures golf group.

‘‘It’s the greatest game. I’d play it every day if I could,’’ he said.
