Maz Holman’s long service recognised

- DANIEL WHITFIELD

Porirua School stalwart Maz Holman says the enjoyment of working with children has kept her teaching for 30 years.

Holman, a Titahi Bay resident, was recognised for her long service at a school assembly last month.

‘‘It’s definitely the children that has made me stick around,’’ she said. ‘‘They’re very much a part of my family. It’s nice to be recognised.’’

Though some things have changed around the school, Holman said the community had stayed the same and she loved the fact she was now teaching the children of children she had previously taught.

Holman started at Porirua School in a long-term relieving position that never really ended.

Before that she spent several years teaching at other schools around the Wellington region, including Corinna School and Brooklyn Primary School.

Holman said to be part of the Porirua community and to have children like the ones she has taught over the years was special.

‘‘I always joked that the only way they’d get me to leave would be in a box.’’

However, though Holman plans to continue teaching this year, she said she was stepping out of the classroom and into another position.

She will be the new reading recovery teacher in 2016, and will remain heavily involved in the Enviroschools programme at Porirua School.

School principal Vanessa Hendry paid tribute to Holman for her dedication towards the school and the community.

‘‘Maz is an active participant in the community,’’ Hendry said. ‘‘She has the strong connections with whanau and has a passion towards seeing children succeed.

‘‘She is fun, energetic, and someone we love to have around.’’
