New theatre company stages ‘bad’ musical

-

A new community theatre group is looking for fresh talent for its first production, Bad Girls the Musical.

Kauri Theatre Company has been in the works since 2014, when a group of like-minded thespians began to talk about the lack of theatre opportunities.

After a lot of discussion and networking, the company was set up formally late last year, and is now ready to stage Bad Girls.

With members across the Wellington region, president Cheryl Moeau is thrilled the company has had so much support and is looking forward to auditions at Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

‘‘We are excited that all our discussions and planning are going to come to fruition. We are committed to producing high quality theatre which is accessible to both performers and audiences. We value professionalism and excellence so we want to encourage all aspiring actors to audition for our show.’’

Bad Girls is based on the popular British television programme of the same name.

‘‘It is a witty musical and tells the story of the charismatic inmates and guards in Larkhall Prison, set against the backdrop of a bitter struggle for power,’’ Moeau said.

‘‘There are great parts for women, from nasty Shell Dockley to the comedic two Julies,’’ she said.

‘‘As well as a great script, the songs such as All Banged Up and The Baddest and the Best will have the audience totally involved.

‘‘It’s a powerful show, with some strong messages but it’s also a lot of fun.’’

Director Lindsey Rusling of Whitby is well known for tackling a number of productions over recent years: Lords and Ladies, Cabaret, On The Shore of the Wide World, and Dusty.

Rusling is also the performing arts teacher at Chilton St James College in Lower Hut and runs drama classes for students outside school hours. She brings a wealth of directorial experience but is also an accomplished actor who will be treading the boards herself in July.
