More than one in 18 Wellingtonians have Covid-19, according to data from the district health boards released on Thursday.

However, active cases in both Wellington, Hutt Valley and neighbouring Wairarapa have dropped since last Monday.

It comes as the Ministry of Health confirmed on Thursday another 10 people across the country had died from the virus, including one in Hutt Valley and one in Hawke’s Bay.

Hospitalisations in Wellington were up from 34 on Monday last week to 43 people, dropped by one in the Hutt Valley to 22, and seven were hospitalised in Wairarapa.

As of Thursday, a total of 25,728 people across Wellington and Hutt district health board regions had Covid-19, one person for every 18 people, and nearly 60 per cent of them were in Wellington or Porirua.

That number on Monday, March 14, was 1 in 13, with nearly 35,000 active cases across the two regions.

A further 1792 active cases were in Wairarapa, or one in 27 people who lived in the rural region.

Earlier last week, the Wellington and Hutt DHBs said they were expecting to see a similar scenario to Auckland DHBs, where executive teams were delivering meals and making beds, and anaesthetists taking blood.

The DHBs were predicting about 50 to 60 people sick with Covid-19 in Wellington Regional Hospital, and between 30 and 35 in Hutt Hospital at the worst point of the wave.

Ministry of Health figures released on Thursday revealed 19,566 new community cases across the country, including 1405 in Capital & Coast, 874 in Hutt Valley and 260 in Wairarapa.
