Future’s bright for Porirua rangatahi

-

Te Rauparaha Arena will be bursting at the seams with college students from across Porirua on 9 May as they explore career opportunities.

The community-led careers expo will be the city’s largest expo in many years, with more than 70 stalls showcasing career and education pathways, as well as current vacancies with local employers.

“We want this expo to demonstrate to our city’s young people that there are some amazing opportunities out there,” says Porirua City Council General Manager Community & Partnerships Reuben Friend.

“Whether they want to work in technology, health, or construction sectors, there’s a lot to choose from.”

Students from all of Porirua’s colleges will have the opportunity to visit the expo during the day, with the event also open to students in the wider Wellington region, as well as those who have already left school and are still investigating their job opportunities.

There will be tech workshops during the day, with speakers from a range of Wellington tech companies, including gaming, cyber security, software development, and product and design.

The expo is a collaborative effort between a group of Porirua workforce partners: Porirua City Council, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Education, Kāinga Ora, Le Fale Jobs and Skills Hub, Partners Porirua, and the colleges.

“It’s an interactive way that rangatahi seeking work or a pathway after college can find more information and be inspired into a brighter future,” says Porirua Mayor Anita Baker.

She says the expo is a great opportunity for local organisations to collaborate on providing support for our young people who are due to leave school soon or are looking at career options.

“Anything these organisations can do to help rangatahi into career pathways is a fantastic outcome.”

The Porirua Careers Expo will be held at Te Rauparaha Arena on Thursday 9 May, 9.30am-5.30pm.
