Access to arts centre

-

A Ka¯ piti Performing Arts Centre access agreement between

Ka¯ piti College and Ka¯ piti Coast District Council has been affirmed by college representatives and mayor K Gurunathan.

The agreement, signed on Monday, provides for a number of days each year when the centre will be available for community use, while still allowing for it to function as a college facility.

“This project provides an opportunity for council to get behind a project to make it a hub for the community’s performing artists,” Mr Gurunathan said.

“The college came to us with strong support from our choirs, orchestras and dance organisations who all said they needed a facility like this, and we were convinced that this would truly be a community asset.”

The college had plans for a school facility, and applied to council for extra funding to make the facility fit for purpose for wider community use.

“It’s fantastic that the college and community will be able to share this incredible facility into the future,” Ka¯ piti College Board of Trustees chairwoman Cas Carter said.

“The college has a track record of opening its gates to the community with the gymnasium, kitchen, grounds and other facilities being used extensively by local organisations and businesses.”

The college is still busy fundraising its share, with a Kiwi Legends in Concert event planned for late June, seat sponsorship and Givealittle campaigns.
