Guides earn their Aoraki awards Four put in effort to receive top award

-

Jasmine Jury, Dayna Engelen, Hannah Graham and Imogen Davidson from Waikanae Girl Guides have been awarded with the Guides Aoraki Award.

The Aoraki Award is the most prestigious award in the Guide section.

The award is the culmination of years of service to Girl Guiding and requires a lot of commitment and effort.

All four girls have had to take an active leadership role in their Guide unit, experience an adventurous activity such as archery, rock wall climbing or laser tag, as well as participate in community service.

Throughout their time in Guides the girls have participated in Anzac Day poppy selling for the Otaki RSA, white ribbon events, selling daffodils in support of the Cancer Society Daffodil Day, assisted at the annual Stroke Central Region AGM and Fun Day serving morning tea and lunch, clearing away dishes afterward and assisting stroke survivors playing bocchia (indoor petanque/boules) throughout the day as well as rubbish cleanups around Waikanae.

“The hardest challenge all four girls had to face was organising a camp for a group of younger girls from the Waikanae Guides,” said Guides leader Bronwyn Glavin.

Each girl had to organise activities, meals, budgets, accommodation (tents) and everything else in between.

“All the girls found it challenging, particularly when the weather let them down and played havoc with their accommodation. The girls all showed commitment and resilience in that situation and they showed that they had what it takes to keep the girls in their care occupied and happy throughout the whole event.

“It gave them all a new understanding of the level of work it takes the Guide leaders to put on these activities. Jasmine, Dayna, Hannah and Imogen have all worked very hard over their time as Guides and it has paid off. They all absolutely deserve the honour of the Aoraki Award.”

They all absolutely deserve the honour of the Aoraki Award.
