Anthony Dreaver will be guest speaker at Ka¯ piti Historical Society’s final public meeting for the year at Kapiti Uniting Parish, 10 Weka Rd, Raumati Beach, on Tuesday, December 4, at 7.30pm.

The venue is the Kapiti Uniting Church, 10 Weka Rd, Raumati Beach.

Access is through the main door of the church, gold coin koha.

His talk is called The Paraparaum­u Problem: does it have a history?

“Compared to Otaki, ¯ Waikanae or Paeka¯ ka¯ riki, Paraparaum­u started late, developed slowly and appears to lack interest until the boom years of late 20th century.

“I will expand on this viewpoint and consider what Kapiti Historical Society might do to challenge it.”Anthony is a former teacher, and has a special interest in the history of the

Ka¯ piti/Horowhenua region.

He has written histories of Horowhenua County and of Levin, and a biography of local scholar, tramper and photograph­er Leslie Adkin.

For 12 years he edited the Otaki Historical Society’s annual journal.

As chairman of the trust that runs Paekakarik­i Station Museum, he curated the museum’s exhibition about three local Marines camps A friend in need: the Paekakarik­i story, and is a founding member of Kapiti US Marines Trust.

He was the key figure in co-ordinating, through the Menzshed, the building of the replica Marines hut which is now on site near the memorial in Queen Elizabeth Park.

And the informativ­e signage trail in Whareroa Park, where Camp Mackay was located, was largely his work.

He also promotes local history through adult education courses, bus tours, talks and contributi­ng to a heritage trail.
