Musicians show their talents
The Ka¯ piti Music Centre, a Charitable Trust, held its annual Grand Concert to a sold-out audience at Southward Theatre on Sunday.
“The dedication and progress of the tutors and students were most ably demonstrated as the three orchestras of the music centre all performed several pieces with confidence and flair to a very appreciative audience,” manager Jill Duncan said.
“The junior orchestra of 105 beginner students, most of whom have only had 30 weeks’ music tutoring, impressed everyone with their ability to play together under the baton of conductor Merrick Stein.
“They were followed by the intermediate orchestra of second and third year students, including the centre Glee Club singers who performed a beautiful rendering of the old favourite Blue Smoke arranged by flute tutor Monica VerburgVan Eijick.
“Merrick once again bought out the best of the students’ abilities in the demanding pieces played by the senior orchestra, the favourite of which seemed to be La Comparsita although the audience sang along with enthusiasm to Feliz Navidad arranged by tutor Fernando Figueroa,” she said.
“The music centre reluctantly farewelled cello tutor Jamie Beardslie who leaves to further his university music studies.
“To quote an appreciative parent the event was a ‘golden moment in life’.”
Ka¯ piti Music Centre operates out of Ka¯ piti College and provides a comprehensive musical tuition for students from five years to adults.
Ten experienced music teachers tutor a range of instruments in small class groups.
