Sorry, got to run

-

The Great Forest running event at Waitarere caters for pretty much anyone who wants to stretch their legs.

It’s been so successful it has a proud history of 23 consecutive years. Being one of New Zealand’s best off road running events, it attracts competitors from all over the lower North Island.

This year around 2200 people entered. I’ve had the privilege of practically doing all the events, from a 5km walk (with one of the kids asleep in the buggy) to the full marathon, and each one had its own challenges offset against the thrill and relief of crossing the finish line.

Last weekend our two youngest loved the 5km run and crossed the finish line in around 23 minutes.

What impressed me the most was all competitors — young and old that gave the event a crack.

I’ve always enjoyed off road running and lined up for the 21km, but couldn’t beat Kapiti News editor David Haxton (who had obviously been training harder than me).

Thanks to the 50 odd volunteers, generous sponsors (like Waitarere Beach 4 Square) and land owners for opening up their properties.

Because of the huge success of the event again this year, Horowhenua community groups will benefit from thousands of dollars raised that will make huge difference.

We are fortunate to have many exciting local running events to choose from.

The 5km Park Run at Otaihanga Domain every Saturday morning at 8am is always popular.

On Sunday May 26 In the Footsteps of the Marines run is through 13km of the Whareroa Farm, with a fantastic view of Ka¯ piti and the South Island on a clear autumn morning.

If you are interested in something a bit different try the Midnight Madness run up Levin’s Trig on Wednesday July 10. You will need a decent torch to cover the 3-10km distance.

I find having an event to aim for helps my overall fitness and it’s a great opportunity to support community initiatives, plus run with family and friends.

We are lucky to have so many options to choose from.
