Moana to play Otaki¯
Acclaimed singer songwriter Moana Maniapoto will be performing a special one-off concert in O¯ taki on May 25.
Maniapoto, an arts laureate as well as inductee into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame, who tours alongside sister Trina Maniapoto, Paddy Free and Cadzow Cossar, will perform My Name is Moana, an intimate 90-minute tribute to the ocean.
This show celebrates New Zealanders relationship to the ocean through a mixture of music, myth and personal anecdote.
An intimate, uplifting and often humorous experience, My Name is Moana includes garage party classics as well as those inspirational songs, which have taken Moana and her musicians across 30 countries around the world.
“We have travelled to some of the most exotic places on the planet but this journey around our own beautiful country is an absolute privilege,” Moana said.
“It is a reminder too of the passion people have for reclaiming the health of our waterways.”
Moana has a long association with O¯ taki.
“I love O¯ taki.
“I went to a taonga pu¯ oro wa¯ nanga there many years ago and that formed part of my experimentation in subsequent albums.
“I met Richard Nunns and Brian Flintoff there and I actually met my partner Toby there too.
“O¯ taki is famous for it’s wa¯ nanga reo and the role it played in language revitalisation.
“It’s where I went to study around 1988-90 to gain the confidence to speak te reo.
“And now it’s home to
Ma¯ oriland Film Festival.”
The O¯ taki performance, supported by the Ma¯ oriland Charitable Trust, is on Saturday May 25 at 8pm at the Maoriland Hub, Main St, O¯ taki.
