KAPITI NEURO THERAPY CELEBRATES 5 YEARS OF OFFERING ART THERAPY AND WELLBEING COURSES TO THE KAPITI REGION

-

Ihave been working as a Qualified Art Therapist from my Art Studio based in Waikanae since 2017.

As a Creative Art Therapist, I use a variety of art modality to help my clients to express their thoughts and emotions. I often use music to help my clients to engage with their emotions.

I have seen many young children over the last five years and have noticed a huge increase for therapy intervention for young children since the covid lock down in 2021. Many children and teenagers have a high level of anxiety, struggle with the transitioning back to school or experience daily challenges to regulate their emotions or have more complex psychological backgrounds.

Many of my young clients have been diagnosed with SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder), they overrespond to sound, light, fabrics, texture, touch and struggle in a class environment to focus and concentrate. Many of my clients have been on the spectrum of Neurodiversity like Autism, Aspergers, ADD, ADHD, GDD or have learning difficulties like Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia or have a combination of speech delay or learning and behaving challenges at a young age.

We are passionate about changing attitudes and support available for neurodiversity.

We believe in a positive future after diagnosis and advocate using effective non-medical therapy options.

Our Art Therapy is client centred and we provide a safe and loving environment. The art therapy space is in a treehouse up above the trees and has a lovely outlook into a large garden area. My clients can work with clay, acrylic, watercolour, wood, concrete, and natural materials like shells to create mandalas, clay figures, acrylic paintings, mixed media paintings as well as watercolour art. We incorporate the neurography technique where clients learn to draw with their own unique neurowaves to download stress onto paper and work consciously on it. Neurography allows clients to express deep unconscious feelings onto paper in a nonverbal way. Neurography is based on Gestalt Therapy, Art Therapy, Biofeedback and Neuro Linguistic programming.

Often the therapeutic environment helps children, teenagers, and adults alike to learn to tolerate the uncertainty of the unknown and become more comfortable to open to new possibilities. The activities practiced in the art therapy treatment can lead to finding new hobbies or interests which are important for ongoing self-support.

The combination of expressing emotions through art with a qualified art therapist and relaxing the

nervous and sensory system in our Multi-Sensory Room is for many children and teenagers, a great benefit. Neurodiverse children are often overlooked especially in early childhood education where it can be hard to differentiate between children who have a specific issue and to those who are just a bit later in their individual development.

We offer Multi-Sensory Therapy and Snoezelen Therapy which allows the client to relax in a multisensory environment and weight blankets.

We also support parents through the diagnostic process, establishing support at school and help them to understand their children’s individual needs.
