Follett looks into future

- — Tony Nielsen

Never By Ken Follett, MacMillan, $39.99

.. .. .. .. .. .. ..

Since 1974 Ken Follett has sold over 160 million books, mostly novels focused on historical fiction. In Never Follett takes us on a contemporary journey, resulting in the imminent threat of World War III and nuclear mayhem.

From the heat of the Sahara desert, to the political arenas of North America, China and North Korea, it’s a high stakes game remorselessly moving steadily from a minor issue in the Sahara to a who blinks first and launches a nuclear war. As is his usual approach, Ken Follett has created a monster book in every sense of the word. His skills are developing characters and a plot which grows from page to page. He developed those skills across a number of historical masterpieces and now shows that they are transferable to a modern setting. As the story beds in and the strands start to come together, as a reader I didn’t expect the conclusion and raw energy that Follett delivers as the final pages arrive. If anything that’s what makes Never a must read for any thriller reader.
