Lights, camera, overkill

What is it with the Ka¯ piti Coast District Council’s newfound obsession with traffic lights? Firstly the junction of the old SH1 and Ihakara St, Paraparaumu, which trials showed effectively backed up traffic on both highways. Now, I read they plan to put lights at the junction with Ngaio Rd, Waikanae “to enhance connectivity”, in the roading jargon of the day.

Three sets of lights in about 500 metres is an absurdity.

Nobody that I talk to in the district can see any need for this new ploy to slow local traffic nor can I find anyone who was asked to participate in the so-called “extensive consultations” cited by Fletcher Construction.
