Nature’s Wildlife Weapons By James Ryan, Bateman Books, $19.99 .. .. ..

.. .. .. .. Written by 12-year-old James Ryan, a member of the Canterbury

Museum Explorer's

Club, this book shares his knowledge and interest in wild beasts.

From claws, tusks and teeth, he looks at the fighting parts of animals both alive and extinct. As well as animals like the Chinese water deer which has tusks, it looks at the formidable weapons of extinct creatures like the Megalodon, a huge shark which grew up to 18m long and weighed up to 60 tonnes. It's an easy to follow book for kids, by a kid. Great photos and fun facts feature in this which will appeal especially to boys. I liked the page dedicated to Joan Wiffen, New Zealand's amateur fossil hunter. Great effort James! —
