Historical society’s first talk of the year
The Ka¯piti Historical Society’s first talk for the year will be given by former US Marine Major Larry Keim.
His topic is ‘Peacemaking and Peacekeeping: Working with the United Nations in Somalia and the Western Sahara.’
“In 1992 New Zealand sent peacekeeping troops to Somalia to support the United Nations operations in Somalia, initiated when civil war broke out after the Somalian president was overthrown the previous year,” the society’s Roger Childs said.
“As the situation on the ground deteriorated and a large scale famine resulted, United States forces entered in 1993 to assist with famine relief as part of the larger United Nations effort.
“Major Larry Keim’s talk will centre on his personal experiences as the assigned ground operations officer to the Joint Special Operations Task Force and the challenges he and his men faced in providing protection for the humanitarian famine relief efforts of 40 nations throughout the country.”
The session will take place on Tuesday March 29 in the Kapiti Uniting Church in Weka Rd, Raumati Beach, starting at 7.30pm.
Everyone is welcome with a gold coin koha. Masks and vaccine passes are required.
