Various vegetables have been donated to the Ka¯piti Community Foodbank — including some giant pumpkins.

“The pumpkins were donated by Claire Turner,” food bank manager Kerry Lovell said.

“Her children brought pumpkin seeds home from school.”

Meanwhile, last month was busy at the food bank with many new clients registering.

“As families come out of isolation [because of Covid-19], we are seeing an increase of people needing us to help with diminished budgets, lack of sick leave, and loss of jobs due to insufficient work [lack of supplies].

“Many people are experiencing stand-down periods from their work place which is adding huge pressure to their family budget.

“Families are getting into desperate situations before coming for help and so often their cupboards are bare.

“We are seeing quite a few young people living in tents, cars, vans or couch surfing.

“Families are also been displaced with wanting to isolate, protect elderly or young ones in their home.

“Agencies in Ka¯piti are all working hard together to support many of the families in crisis in the district.”
