Community event to aid Ukrainians

-

Afundraiser at St Peter’s Hall in Paeka¯ka¯riki aims to raise funds and support local Ukrainians with an event featuring Ukrainian food and music.

Event organiser Helen Keivom was approached by mayor K Gurunathan to run the event, on Saturday May 14 from 6.30pm, on behalf of members of the Ukrainian community.

“We aim to provide a taste of authentic Ukrainian culture, and an opportunity for locals to help the people of Ukraine.” Former Prime Minister Jim Bolger, Mayor Gurunathan, and Ukrainian-Kiwi Sergiy Vorobey will speak.

A resident of Waikanae, Vorobey has lived in New Zealand since he was12 and retains a deep connection to family and culture in Ukraine.

Vorobey says the Ukrainian community is very grateful for the support already shown. “We are overwhelmed with the response locally, even from people who we haven’t previously engaged with who are providing all the support they can, from people selling woodwork at the market, flying the Ukrainian flag to offering donations. Seeing the rest of the world unite with Ukraine is so moving, and that’s evident in New Zealand and here in Ka¯piti.

“We are all touched by what so many people are doing for us. Just from a single post from my social media page raised $2000, some of which came from Russian friends. Even a small donation here can make a big difference back home.”

Vorobey’s son Ruslan will perform on violin. Raumati resident Andrew Rakich who has a strong connection with Ukrainian culture and community overseas will play Ukrainian folk songs. Cellist Janet Holborow will also be performing.

Keivom says she is heartened by the businesses and individuals who have come forward with generous donations and that Ukrainian cuisine cooked by Ukrainians and other members of the community will be a highlight.

Burma Support Paeka¯ ka¯ riki, who have hosted successful fundraisers for Burma, are helping with the event. Hall hire is sponsored by locals.

There will be an auction and raffle of art and other items, including a scenic flight over Ka¯piti and home handyman services. Any donations for the raffle or auction are welcome.

“We are hopeful that Ka¯piti will come to the ball and support this much needed endeavour,” Keivom said.

Tickets are $30 which includes entry and dinner, and all proceeds will go towards humanitarian aid through “DF Charity Hearts”, a volunteer charity based in Rivne, Ukraine.

Tickets available online at eventfinda.co.nz and at Paeka¯ka¯riki Fruit Supply.

Anyone who can’t come but would like to make a donation can contact Keivom on 027584251 or email RUOL4@xtra.co.nz
