Paint the hall red this Saturday night

-

Paeka¯ka¯riki trio The Crimson Club are returning to their favourite venue, St Peters Hall in Paeka¯ka¯riki, on Saturday for a special evening of eclectic cabaret.

Featuring the dynamic lineup of Shona Jaunas (vocals, violin), Dr Melissa Garber (accordion, theremin, vocals, percussion) and Janet Holborow (cello, vocals, alto flute and bass drum), The Crimson Club are bringing their irreverent quirky cabaret for a special one-off performance.

Their effervescent interpretation of classic 70s, 80s and 90s songs with a splash of French cabaret, classical frivolity and original tunes gives an original take on some great tunes.

Led Zeppelin, Soft Cell, The Eurythmics, Edith Piaf and Radiohead all get The Crimson Club treatment.

“We like to take a song and put our own spin on it, bringing out the meaning and sometimes the irony,” said Shona.

“We all like extending the boundaries of what the music offers and what the instruments offer, so each song has its own flavour and style.”

The group have been working on some new additions to their repertoire, which will be presented at the show.

“We have been diving into the 80s and 90s and really enjoying teasing out the riffs that make those songs and transporting them on to a cello or accordion.

“It feels like uncovering the soul of the song.”

The trio has previously played at Coastella, Fete de la Musique in Wellington, and their Whirlwind Worldwide Wellington Tour in the New

Zealand Fringe Festival.

“We are really looking forward to getting back out there and giving people a good night out.

“Sunday is Mother’s Day, so we will be doing a special shout out to all the wonderful mothers out there.”

Tickets are $20 and are available from Eventfinda and at the Paeka¯ka¯riki Fruit Supply.
