Former PM to speak on wars in Afghanistan and, now, Ukraine

-

Waikanae Beach resident and former Prime Minister Jim Bolger will be the Ka¯piti Historical Society’s May speaker. His topic will be “Reflections on how history keeps repeating itself — how it repeats and shatters delusions, with particular reference to the wars in Afghanistan and Ukraine”.

“Bolger had a distinguished record in New Zealand politics before resigning from Parliament in 1998,” the society’s Roger Childs said.

“The son of Irish immigrants, Bolger was born in O¯ punake and was later a farmer and involved with the Federated Farmers before entering Parliament in 1972.

“He became leader of the National Party in 1986 and won a landslide victory in 1990.

“He remained as Prime Minister until 1997.

“After leaving Parliament he became New Zealand’s ambassador to the United States, a position he held until 2002.”

The session will take place at the Ka¯piti Uniting Church in Weka Rd, Raumati Beach on Tuesday May 10, starting at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome. A koha would be appreciated.

In June, Owen Mapp will speak on his life as a bone/ivory carver and the history of using bone in New Zealand.

Later in the year there will be talks on:

■ The first mayor of Ka¯piti, Barry

Hadfield, by his son David.

What children will be taught on New Zealand history from 2023 by Roger Childs.
