Catch the flowering buds of May

-

People are encouraged to check out the flowering buds on the kohekohe trees in Whareroa Farm.

“For those unfamiliar with kohekohe, the Kāpiti Coast used to be covered with this lowland forest species and the flowerings are an amazing spectacle,” Liffet Stewart said.

“The cream-coloured flowers emerge directly out of the trunk, as do the subsequent seed pods.

“Other trees throughout the Pacific that have this habit, called cauliflory, include the papaya, jackfruit and bread fruit.

“The new Transmission Gully route has taken the stress taken out of the trip to and from Wellington, so encourage friends who live in

Wellington to join local Kapiti Coasters for a picnic and exploration at Whareroa Farm in June/July to catch this wonderful spectacle. The flowers are just beginning and the bird life that takes advantage of the nectar feast are very prolific.”
