Waikanae brewery drinks to success

- David Haxton

North End Brewery, in Waikanae, is celebrating success in the New World Beer and Cider Awards.

The brewery’s Bones of the Land saison beer is among the awards’ Top 30.

“To make the Top 30, an entry has to not just impress, but must reach the threshold of being a world-class example of its style,” awards judging chairman Michael Donaldson said.

“This Top 30 is a showcase of some of the best brewing talents and innovators in the country.”

North End Brewery head brewer Kieran Haslett-Moore said: “We’re pretty stoked.

“It’s the first time we’ve been in the Top 30.

“We’re pretty rapt that we only entered the one beer and got the big result which is cool.

“We’ve entered the awards every year since it started and almost always get highly commended but have never made the Top 30 before.”

He said the winning beer, which was brewed towards the end of last year, was a traditional saison (French for season) pale ale which was “fruity, spicy and quite refreshing”.

And there’s enough to keep up with expected demand.

“It’s the sort of beer we’d usually brew once a year but we’ve already brewed two batches this year.”

North End Brewery has been operating since 2013.
