Every day is different at Enliven’s Ka- piti Cottage

-

Keeping things fresh and fun, and creating a space for connection with others, is the name of the game at Enliven’s Kapiti Cottage.

The cottage is home to Enliven’s Kapiti Day Programme which helps elders living in the community enjoy companionship and stay mentally and physically active. It also offers family carers an opportunity to take a break while their loved ones are busy having fun.

Kapiti Day Programme manager Dorothy Todd says the programme is designed to keep the elders’ minds and bodies active and is tailored to suit their unique interests and abilities.

“We love injecting a little spontaneity into the mix. No two days are the same here, and I think that’s what really allows everyone to bond and form genuine relationships.”

On any given day a variety of activities and games are played. From Boccia, an indoor version of bowls, to Upwords, a variation on scrabble. The cottage’s cupboard is stacked full of games. In addition to games, elders get involved in arts and crafts, gentle exercise classes, themed events, quizzes, and crosswords.

This week is Diversional Therapy Awareness Week, an annual event that celebrates the important work diversional therapists do throughout Aotearoa – such as Enliven’s Kapiti Day

Programme.

Dorothy says the programme reflects Enliven’s elder-centred philosophy, which recognises the importance of meaningful activity, fun and spontaneity in elders’ lives.

“Our aim is to help elders, whatever their age or health status, stay connected to the world and their community.

“As diversional therapists, we take a holistic approach to health and wellbeing and believe that when elders are somewhere they feel safe, relaxed and supported, they thrive.”
