First ball for Pride Youth

Dress to Impress theme for teens’ inaugural function

-

Kāpiti Pride Youth Ball promises an exciting opportunity for Kāpiti’s gender and sexuality-diverse youths. The ball, the first of its kind in Kāpiti, is being held by Paekākāriki Pride’s youth representatives in conjunction with students from Kāpiti College’s Queer Straight Alliance.

“The event is a big deal for gender and sexuality-diverse young people who can often feel like they are otherwise missing out on fully enjoying school ball season for fear of not being able to be their true selves,” said Paekā kā riki Pride youth rep Eloise Judge.

“It’s a chance for queer teens to have fun free of judgment.

“This is an event put on by queer teens for queer teens and our ally friends.”

The main thing is people can come and express themselves in the way that is right and comfortable for them, without fear of bullying, judgment or discrimination.

People can bring a ball date, but they don’t have to.

The ball will feature live bands, a DJ, mocktails, a chill-out zone, photo booth and yassification station.

The theme for the ball is Dress to Impress and it’s a chance for young rainbow rangatahi aged 13-17 to go all out and dress up in whatever feels right for them.

“It might be an outfit found at a second-hand shop, or a fancy formal gown or suit — there are no rules.

“Planning your outfit and getting ready with friends is a pre-party in itself and all part of the experience.”

Paekākāriki Pride volunteers will be on hand to provide security and transport to those needing it. It is an alcohol, smoke and vape-free event.

Organisers are grateful to Kāpiti Coast District Council and the Campe Estate for funding and supporting

this fabulous first-of-its-kind event in Kāpiti.

There will be limited door sales. Organisers encourage those who can afford it, to pay it forward to give young queer people the opportunity to celebrate, connect and have fun with their peers and allies.
