Locals refer to the villages and townships that line the Kāpiti Coast as ‘a string of pearls’: each one is different, with its special character and vibe, but perfect in its own way.

This diversity is reflected in our art and artists. This year your Trail showcases more than 125 artists who live and create on the beautiful Kāpiti Coast, plus many more showing their work in our galleries.

We’re delighted to welcome 24 artists who are new to the Trail in 2023. This mix of new participants along with old favourites keeps the Art Trail fresh and exciting, especially if you’re one of our many ‘super fans’ who return year after year.

You can enjoy traditional media, as well as marvel at the innovation and creativity of artists using recycled and upcycled materials.

Visit individual artists in their studios or shared spaces, or take in many artworks together in one of our participating exhibition spaces or galleries.

Look out for the fabulous public art and heritage information sprinkled across our district. Enjoy murals including by artist Theo Arraj in Ōtaki and Raumati Village, and sculptures such as the Tohorā multimedia installation by internationally acclaimed artist Kereama Taepa at Maclean Park, Paraparaumu Beach. It’s lit up at night and you’ll hear whale song and soothing sounds of the sea.

The Art Trail is an annual tradition for locals and visitors alike. Transmission Gully has made it a breeze to travel from Wellington City, the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. Now the Ōtaki to Peka Peka expressway facilitates travel from the north. The Art

Trail provides a perfect excuse to explore everything the Kāpiti Coast has to offer.

Many out-of-towners come to stay with friends, or book a bach, Air BnB, or motel as a base for a fun weekend away. The selection of eateries ranges from quaint and quirky, to the high-end such as Paraparaumu Beach’s award-winning 50-50 restaurant.

For those who want to add more to their Trail or entertain the non-trailers, we have great beaches and pools, exciting hikes and trails, wildlife reserves, film and live theatres, boutique shopping, and more – there’s something for all the family.
