Driver courses to keep up to speed

Drivers courses are being offered for the elderly

- Christine Stephens

Do you know all the new road rules? Are you concerned about your upcoming driving test? For many of us it may be 60 years or more since we sat the first and only test for our driver’s licence. However, as the wheels of time turn, so too do the rules and dynamics of the road.

Changing driving conditions and changing bodies mean we need to be updated about how we can contribute to road safety. It’s time for seniors to consider a journey towards new skills and increased confidence through driving refresher courses.

Age Concern and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency are offering free four-hour driver refresher courses at various locations in the Kā piti District, including light refreshments. The tutors from Age Concern bring a wealth of official information and practical examples from their own experiences. There are plenty of opportunities to share your experiences, practise with new knowledge, and discuss the information with others. It’s an opportunity to learn from each other, share tips, and build a supportive network. Driving becomes not just a solitary activity but a communal endeavour, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility on the road.

You will be provided with an attractive workbook that you can use during the class and take home to keep you — and your friends — updated with the latest intersection and roundabout rules. The classes also use Powerpoint slides and videos to cover a range of topics, including personal driving safety, safe driving skills, and strategies for managing various road situations. In addition, the course covers alternatives to driving. It is very reassuring to be reminded that there are many alternatives to driving and that these may be cheaper than owning a car.

Driving is a skill that evolves over time, and with advancements in technology and changes in traffic regulations, even the most seasoned drivers can benefit from a refresher. These courses are not about testing capabilities, but offer an opportunity to enhance existing skills, adapt to modern driving demands, and foster a renewed sense of confidence behind the wheel.
