College establishes a French connection

-

Paraparaumu College has established a friendship with Lyce´ e Louis Pasteur school in Avignon, France, and welcomed its first long-term exchange students, Audrey Larguier and Victoire Borel.

The exchange was established by head of languages Naomi Connolly and French teacher Laurence Dordor, who recognise the importance of providing opportunities for students to travel overseas to learn more about the language and culture of both France and New Zealand.

“Spending a long period of time overseas really is the main way to become fluent in another language,” Audrey said.

“I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people, attend a New Zealand school, and experience life as a New Zealander.

“For me the biggest challenge was adapting to the different school timetables, as our school days are a lot longer in France, and also the food.

“I have really missed our French bread too. I have had the opportunity to do a bungee jump, which was amazing, and also visit many beautiful places in New Zealand.

“I have met many new friends and look forward to welcoming them back to Avignon next year.”

Marion Daste, who recently returned from staying with her exchange student Victoire in Avignon, said, “I had a great time in France.

“The lessons were really challenging, but I made lots of new friends.”

Marion is now hosting her student Victoire and is looking forward to showing her how to be a Kiwi.

Naomi said, “Giving young people the chance to immerse themselves in the language and culture of a Frenchspeaking country is the key to becoming fluent in French.

“Long-term exchanges, whilst initially daunting can be hugely beneficial for language learners.

“Paraparaumu College students will also have the opportunity to do a shorter language trip to New Caledonia in 2024.”
